Derek Scott, MEd is a School Intervention Coach supporting the implementation of the Friend to Friend program as a part of the Center for Violence Prevention's (CVP) bullying and aggression prevention initiative. At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, he works with our partners in the Philadelphia Public School District to collect data on school climate, train and coach facilitators in intervention curriculum, and coordinate professional development with faculty, staff, and families.

Originally trained as an urban educator in Boston College’s Donovan Scholars program, Derek worked for five years as a full-time classroom teacher in schools serving student populations from some of Boston’s historically under-resourced neighborhoods. This included middle and high school settings in public and private schools, as well as in a GED program for transitionally homeless and incarcerated youth.

Derek then transitioned to administration, working as a Dean to foster a safe, socially just, and trauma-informed school culture. Trained in Restorative Practices, Collaborative Problem Solving, and Trauma-Informed instruction, Derek trained and coached faculty and staff over four years to strengthen teaching and disciplinary practices to be more responsive and consistent with the needs of students and families.

Bringing ten years of experience in public, private, and charter schools as a teacher, leader, and coach, Derek is excited about CVP’s programming, and looks forward to ongoing collaboration with the team to address violence and trauma in school settings.
